Microsoft mulls 'Instant On' for Windows

Posted by BJ

If you feel that Windows starts too slowly most days, Microsoft is considering an option that could help.

The company is surveying select users on whether an "instant on" feature, which would rush a usable desktop to your screen in just seconds, is something they'd like included with Windows.

"The concept is called 'Instant On.' Instant On takes your computer from being completely powered down or turned off to being usable for a few specific activities in a very short amount of time," according to excerpts from the survey posted by Engadget.

"The Instant On experience is different from "Full Windows" because it limits what activities you can do and what applications you can have access to," the survey states.

Faster boot times are clearly a priority for Microsoft and could be included in Windows 7, the next planned release of the operating system.

"For Windows 7, a top goal is to significantly increase the number of systems that experience very good boot times. In the lab, a very good system is one that boots in under 15 seconds," engineer Michael Fortin said in an August blog post

Microsoft has already been working more closely with PC makers both on Windows 7 and Windows Vista to try to improve, among other things, system boot time. The first fruits of that effort are expected to emerge on certain new PCs for the holidays.

T-Mobile to Offer Google Android Phone Next Month

T-Mobile and Google will publicly display the HTC Dream handset, operating the Android operating system
T-Mobile has come forward and announced it will introduce the first Google Android-powered smart phone during a September 23 press conference in New York City. The HTC Dream Smartphone, or G1, is the first phone to use Google's Android OS, and is expected to launch at the end of October.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved the HTC Dream last month and T-Mobile could ship up to 700,000 Smartphones total, which is higher than early estimates of 300,000 to 500,000. Google hopes the software will make it even easier for users to browse the Internet using their mobile handsets. The Mountain View, CA-based company hopes to be able to sell more advertising while helping consumers find a new way to access the Google search engine.

HTC will compete with the Apple iPhone and Research in Motion's BlackBerry Smartphones, which are two Smartphones that help generate traffic for the mobile Google site.

Company executives from both T-Mobile and Google will be on hand during the press event on September 23, where the media will be able to get our hands on the phone. Pricing and specific information about the phone remain unknown, but will likely be unveiled during the event next week.

Unconfirmed rumors indicate the HTC Dream, which is almost the same length as the iPhone 3G, will be available for as low as $149 with a two-year contract. The phone is slightly thinner than the iPhone 3G, and with T-Mobile ready to roll out 3G in more than 20 major U.S. markets, the timing of the first Android device is ideal for T-Mobile.

Analysts expect the T-Mobile phone to be the only Android-based phone to be released in 2008, although several manufacturers reportedly have plans to launch Android devices next year. Even though most consumers choose a phone more because of the phone's features and performance, not the operating system, Google will be able to draw in new users because of the company's strong publicity.

1. Type “about:config” into the address bar and hit return. Scroll
down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining
network.http.proxy.pipelining
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time.
When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really
speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true”
Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true”
Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to some number like 30. This
means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer.

Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0″.
This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.

If you’re using a broadband connection you’ll load pages 2-30 times faster now

SPACE PHOTOS THIS WEEK: Thousand-Ruby Galaxy, More

September 2, 2008--A composite image of Messier 83 reveals the shining stars and red hydrogen gasses of the "Thousand-Ruby Galaxy."

The image was captured by the ESO/MPG 2.2-meter (7.2 feet) telescope in Chile's mountainous Atacama Desert on August 25.

UV radiation, created by newly formed stars in the galactic center, ionizes Messier 83's hydrogen and causes its reddish glow.

The dramatic pinwheel galaxy is some 15 million light-years from Earth, but appears in many ways much like a smaller version of our own Milky Way.

August 20, 2008--A fire at the Ras Lanuf oil refinery complex casts a plume of black smoke into the clear skies near Libya's Mediterranean coast.

NASA's Aqua satellite captured this image of the blaze, which burned for several days.

Libya's National Oil Corporation reported that the fire was an industrial accident in which no one was injured. The nation's proven oil reserves are the world's ninth largest.

August 27, 2008--The history of past Martian climates may lie buried at the planet's poles.

This HiRISE image, taken July 20, shows angular unconformities found in layered deposits near Mars's north pole.

The features can be seen where visible layers appear to be cut off, as observed right of center and at bottom center.

Angular unconformities evidence missing pieces of the red planet's complex geological record, where layers have eroded in places later covered by new material.

August 29, 2008--A composite portrays the Crab Nebula optically, with an image from the Hubble Space Telescope, and with X-ray data from NASA's Chandra X-ray observatory.

The nebula was produced by a cataclysmic supernova seen by Chinese astronomers in A.D. 1054.

The original star's remains form a pulsar in the center of the nebula which emits radiation in a moving, lighthouse-like beam.

The high-energy radiation's direction of polarization, shown by artwork, is aligned with the pulsar's rotation axis.

Google Military-Controlled Satellite Reaches Orbit, We Don't Feel Lucky

Posted by BJ

According to the company, the GeoEye-1 satellite is the highest resolution commercial satellite orbiting the planet right now. It reached orbit yesterday, but in reality, it's not an ordinary commercial satellite: it's fully controlled by the Department of Defense's U.S. National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. And two guys named Larry and Sergei.

Part of the US National Geospatial Intelligence Agency NextView program, the SUV-sized GeoEye-1 launched yesterday in a Delta II 7326 rocket from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California—without exploding. Hours later, GeoEye's ground station in Norway confirmed that the rocket had delivered its payload right on target. The satellite was alive, fully armed and operational on its 423-mile orbit above the Earth.

Built by General Dynamics, the GeoEye-1 is equipped with a next-generation camera made by ITT. This camera can easily distinguish objects 16 inches long, with 11-bits per pixel color. In other words: this thing can see the color of your shorts. It will be up there, looking at your pants every single day, the time it takes for it to complete one orbit. And it will keep doing that for more than ten years, its expected life.

Of course, there's nothing new here until you notice the huge Google logo on the rocket, signaling the fact that Sergei and Larry own the exclusive rights to the GeoEye-1 images. Yes, no other company will be able to access this information, only Google. And they will be there, available for the public in Google Maps and Google Earth.

But don't fret, tin-foil hatters, because Google won't be able to access the highest resolution images because of US government regulations. Sure, the other guys will, but then again, their big bad satellites can see closer than this one. Still, you can rest safe that your underpants will be safe from public scrutiny. For now. Unless you do like me and keep flashing them around. [GeoEye, Wikipedia, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency via Cnet]
